T’s First Vacation

Last month we brought T on her very first vacation ever. It’s not her first time travelling, but I guess it could be her very first vacation trip 🙂

We went up north to Penang!

Conquering the giant bed…. all mine!

We stayed at Bayview Beach Resort, which has a nice pool, garden and lovely beach. The beds are really huge too! So T could sleep comfortably in between us without any one of us having to sleep on the edge of the bed 😂

Claiming her throne….

Since the weather is super hot in Penang, I spent a day alone with her in the hotel while the others went out sightseeing. We had walks at the beach, walks around the hotel, and enjoying the soft bed and aircond in the room.

Wow look at the mess I’ve made!

Let’s go for a picnic, mom!!

Playing is such hard work, I’m tired now….

Let’s take a nap first…. before anyone gets cranky!

My first time at the beach!

T enjoyed the beach, but she did not really enjoy swimming in the hotel pool. Probably she was too tired and sleepy as she had her poker face on the whole time in the pool and fell asleep as soon as we got back to the hotel room and showered her. Felt a tad disappointed because I thought she would love splashing around in the pool.

Overall, it was a good trip, despite T crying all the way in the car during the journey to Penang. But she slept through the journey back from Penang. It’s not really convenient to bring her out for meals and sightseeing though (hot weather and lack of places to nurse). The hotel however, is quite kid friendly.

9 months of joy

T has just turned 9 months old! It has been a wonderful 9 months journey with my little bubbly (sometimes whiney) bundle of joy. 18 months, considering the time she spent in my tummy. 😂

My little bunny growing up fast!

I have been super busy with my hands so full of T lately. To summarize, at 9 months T has achieved the following:

  1. Crawl forward (and fast!)
  2. Sit up on her own
  3. Hold herself up and try to stand
  4. Lift her knees off the ground while in crawling position
  5. Sprouted her 2nd tooth!
  6. Eat more solid food like rice, roasted veggies, toast, scrambled egg
  7. Clap her hands
  8. Throw tantrums (actually I think this has been going on for a few months 😂 oh dear)
  9. Shake her head to tell you she doesn’t want something

She has been a poor eater lately, refusing all sorts of food and made poor weight gain in her 8th month. However there is some good progress this month after I started giving her more meals. Now, apart from the 2 meals she has at day care, I try to give her an additional breakfast and sometimes supper. Usually it’s yogurt, cheese, bread or fruits. During weekends, she gets snacks in between meals.

Of course, being the picky eater she is, sometimes I don’t understand why non-food items would taste much better to her…

Who needs expensive toys when you can get the same kind of entertainment from cheap plastic bowls! 😂

She has recovered from a bad round of flu and cough and stayed healthy for about 2 weeks. But she is down with the flu and cough again now. What a bad season! The weather has been pretty bad too. Since she is 9 months old now, the doctor has prescribed medication for her flu and chesty cough – Ventamol expectorant and Zyrtec syrup. Both smell like crap. No wonder kids hate their medications.

She is still fully breastfed, although I have to start dipping into my freezer stash now as I’m finding it hard to pump at home while latching her at the same time. I used to do this, to collect enough milk for her next day’s supply. But since she is older now and more aware, she starts to grab at my pump or smacking it away. Pumping at work alone is not enough for her day time supply 😦  I’m glad I did pump diligently before this to collect some emergency stash. Now, I admit I’m a bit lazy and have slacked. I sometimes don’t even bother to pump at night or during weekends when she latches directly. Because you know, hard work keeping her hands to herself!

I hope I can continue breastfeeding her at least till she is 1 year old.

My little baby grows up just too fast! She is losing her baby looks and everyday I’m afraid of blinking because before I know it, she will be 18 years old and walking out of my life 😦  Mommy loves you and will miss you very much, my baby darling.

Allergy season

For the past 1 month, T has been down with cold symptoms – running nose, a bad cough and lots of phlegm. It seemed to improve and worsen every now and then. Been to 2 doctors and they diagnosed it as allergy rhinitis. Surprisingly, I got the same diagnosis too when I too, came down with the same symptoms and went to see a doctor after 2 weeks of suffering.

Allergy season? Both of us never got cold symptoms this bad for this long, before.

Anyway, I don’t mind to be sick, but praying hard that T will recover quickly 😢

Have been trying to supplement her with nutritious food to boost up her immune system but it doesn’t seem to help, so far.

Broccoli day. “Hey Cookie, want some??”

Pumpkin carrot rice porridge

Nowadays, she doesn’t seem to eat much when I give her food BLW style. She mostly just plays with her food and very little goes down her mouth. So I have to make her porridge to make sure she eats something. She is also very particular with her porridge, as she only likes to have very fine and smooth congee style. So I had blend the rice grains to get a finer consistency when cooking the porridge in the slow cooker.

Blender and rice grains ready to be milled into rice powder!

T also has some slight eczema which is suspected to be due to consuming chicken. She can’t tolerate cow’s milk (she gets very cranky and gassy whenever I had milk and then breastfeed her, somehow the milk protein I consumed gets into the breastmilk!) and cheese as well, those give her runny diarrhea. Oh my, what a boring life she will have without milk, cheese and chicken. I am hoping that probiotics will help with all these allergies and eczema. The doctor has prescribed Linex BB-12 for a week to boost her immune system after taking a course of antibiotics. Once we have finished that, I think I will try out LactoGG which claims to be able to help reduce allergies and eczema.

I highly suspect that T has a low immune system, allergies and eczema due to the antibiotics jab that I was given while delivering her. That probably killed all the good bacteria that was supposed to be passed into her system during birth – maybe that’s why she had such bad colic during her early days and unable to tolerate cow’s milk formula. But we didn’t have much choice when the antibiotic jab was given because when the doctor broke my water bag, he said that the water was a little yellowish (suspecting T had already passed motion), hence the antibiotics.

Poor T did not have a good start in life, and I feel bad for not giving her the best start. But I hope I will be able to make it up to her by curing her poor health, allergies and eczema. Please get well soon my dear baby!

7 wonderful months

T is now 7.5 months old! Time really flies away so fast…my baby is growing up too quickly!

At 7 months, T has achieved quite a number of significant milestones compared to her previous months.

  1. She is able to sit steadily without support! Although, she still can’t sit up on her own yet…. she can only maintain her sitting position 😂
  2. She can crawl backwards! Not forward, yet…
  3. She has graduated from puree to porridge and finger food.
  4. Starts screaming or making funny noises to communicate her wants and don’t-wants
  5. She can wave goodbye! I know, it’s hard to believe but the daycare nurses have been teaching her to do that and now she lifts her hand up to wave!
  6. She sprouted her first tooth!! Second one erupting soon.
  7. Starts drinking water from a sippy cup with some assistance to hold the cup

I’m glad that I don’t have to spend a few hours preparing her puree on weekends anymore as she now has her meals at the daycare center which provides baby meals. Mostly rice porridge with a variety of veggies, chicken and fish. On weekends, I cook her rice congee too with quinoa/millet and pork (since she doesn’t get any red meat at the center).

Sweet potato pork porridge

I tried feeding oatmeal (made powdered oats for a finer texture), but she doesn’t seem to like oatmeal as she gagged on it and then vomited!

Blended rolled oats to make oat powder

I have also tried offering finger food like rice crackers and chunks of avocado. She loves them and took them quite well. It’s pretty scary watching them chew on those huge chunks…

Inspecting a chunk of avocado 😂

Pasta and cheese stick

T loves bread too, but I try not to give it to her too often. Usually just a few bites when she screams at me while I’m enjoying my bread.

What T has been eating at home (during weekends) so far:

  1. Pumpkin rice congee
  2. Broccoli rice congee
  3. Spinach rice congee
  4. Sweet potato quinoa rice congee
  5. Sweet potato and zucchini rice millet congee
  6. Sweet potato and pork rice millet congee
  7. Avocado slices
  8. Pasta and cheese sticks
  9. Plum oatmeal

She doesn’t really want to eat baby congee at home although she eats them well at the daycare center. And I found that she hates zucchini (so do I). So I’ve been trying out finger food as well but it seems that she wastes more food than she’s supposed to swallow. Well, I guess it’s a learning process for her as she learns how to pick up her food and feed herself. Thank God for Cookie the smelly beagle (my one and only clean up crew)… I don’t have to clean up the floor after T makes a huge mess dropping and flinging her food everywhere 😂

The worst part of bringing up baby T is when she gets sick. She has been having a bad cough and flu for a few weeks now, and we haven’t been able to sleep well (well, no sleep at all on some nights!). As long as she is healthy and happy, I don’t mind losing a few nights of sleep… but it breaks my heart to see her being sick for a few weeks 😢 Well, at least she still eats and drinks well, and is generally still happy and hyperactive.

Weaning Baby T

My little baby taufu is growing up so fast, I hardly have time nowadays to document her progress. At 6.5 months, she has achieved the following milestones:

  1. Eating solids – started on fruit/vege puree and a little rice porridge. She is officially a greedy foodie!
  2. Able to support herself on all fours but have not started crawling yet although she is trying to.
  3. Started saying “mama” and “papa” 😍😍😍 (though most of the time I think she is just babbling but I love to think that she is calling us…lol)
  4. Emit a high pitch hysterical laugh when she is overexcited…OMG it is so cute but deafening sometimes. With the strength of her vocal chords sometimes I think I will go deaf sooner than I thought.

Lately she loves to chill like this with her leg out

She is also going through a phase of sleep and breastfeeding regression. Sometimes she just refuses to sleep at all, despite having a good sleeping record for the past months. And now she wants to sleep in our bed instead of her cot. Because she wants to nurse in her sleep sometimes – something which she hasn’t done so far. Now she wants to have the convenience of milk and comfort in bed 😑 Talk about breakfast, lunch and supper in bed. Ugh…. Growth spurt maybe? I sure hope T takes up the responsibility of washing my bed sheets next time when she grows up, to make up for all that spit up, vomit, saliva and leaking milk on my bed!! Sometimes, leaking pee too.

She is a good eater and has a healthy appetite so far in the solids department, accepting new food quite well. But she can be quite demanding sometimes. She screams when she sees me eating and wants a share of it. I let her lick my sandwich bread sometimes just to make her shut up 😂 I know it’s bad but a small taste of bread won’t hurt.

Mashing up plums for plum puree 😋

Very happy with my purchase of these food storage cups, they are very useful and convenient to portion and freeze puree!

So far she has tried avocado, banana, carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato, apple, pear and spinach puree, as well as spinach and broccoli rice porridge. I initially started with the 3 day rule, then 2 days, and now sometimes just 1 day! So far she hasn’t shown any allergic reaction except maybe a bit of skin rash after having avocado. And oh my, banana makes her go bonkers. As in really super duper hyperactive that she won’t sleep and bouncing off the walls. It’s probably the high sugar content giving her super charged energy.

Spinach rice porridge

Since baby T now has her meals in the kitchen, Cookie the smelly beagle is always camping outside the kitchen in wait of some leftovers. Because I always try to make a little extra for my little four-legged furbaby. Except for foods like avocado which is a big no-no for dogs.

Baby T now has her meals at home on weekends only as she has 2 meals a day at day care. So I try to prepare something better and more delectable for her on weekends, like porridge. But it seems her stomach does not take to it very well yet. Maybe we will try porridge again a bit later when she is a bit bigger.

I have not tried baby led weaning yet although I have heard and read lots about it. I guess I still believe in the traditional method of soft baby first foods as even our moms weaned us that way and we grew up just fine. I’ve also read and heard that babies on traditional weaning methods grow up not knowing how to chew their food or do not like meat, but I personally think that it’s something they will grow and learn to accept as they grow older. I’m an example of a traditionally weaned baby yet now I love red meat so much I can never be a vegetarian! 😂😂 Besides, soon she will learn to eat finger food as well in a few months’ time. I guess in the end it’s a very personal choice which method to follow and no one should be judged for making that choice. Both has its pros and cons. As for me, I enjoy preparing food for my little princess and it makes me happy to see her enjoy eating it.

My darling princess grows up oh so fast! Feels like just yesterday she popped out of me and now she has started taking her first bites of real food! How time flies.

Wish

Of all the things I ever wished for, you are truly my wish came true.

If I could have another wish come true, I wish you happiness. May your heart always be filled with love and joy, and may sorrow never find you.

6 months old

Happy 6 months old, my little princess! 😘

At 6 months old, T is able to:

  1. Sit up with some support, she can sit in high chairs and booster seats now.
  2. Pay attention and give some reaction when I read her bedtime stories.
  3. Attempt to crawl (but can’t yet)
  4. Open her mouth wide with enthusiasm when she sees the spoon coming towards her during mealtimes.
  5. Hold up her arms to be carried.

Thank you my dearest T, for these wonderful 6 months of love. Although I still get annoyed at you sometimes for kicking up a fuss at bedtime and refusing to sleep (because well you know mommy’s seriously sleep deprived with a long backlog of chores to do while you are sleeping), but deep down inside I love you more than you can imagine and wish that I have all the power in the world to just stop time and hold you in my arms.

You know before you were born, I told daddy that you are never going to sleep in our bed because we need our privacy and you need to learn how to sleep in your own bed independently. Lately daddy’s been finding you sound asleep in the middle of our bed sometimes with your legs kicking at him. Well I know you’re not gonna stay tiny forever and sometimes I do like to cuddle you to sleep, hence sometimes my heart does jump for joy when you refuse to sleep in your own bed, and would happily pick you up and put you in our bed, right beside me 🙂 Yes, I’m guilty of spoiling you. But you won’t want to sleep beside me forever, and you won’t want me to carry you in my arms forever. So I’ll savour the moment while I can.

One day you will want to sleep in your own room, and your own bed. And I will feel a deep hole in my heart and a little bit colder in bed without you by my side.
